Acme Oyster House®
World Oyster Eating Championship
The Acme Oyster House® World Oyster Eating Championship will be held June 4th during the 2017 New Orleans Oyster Festival at Woldenberg Park. This Major League Eating event hosts 12 professional eaters.
After 10 years of wins by Sonya ” The Black Widow” Thomas, Adrian “The Rabbit” Morgan ate his way to the top to return the winners belt to New Orleans by slurping down 44 dozen oysters. Sonya “The Black Widow” took home second place and Michelle “Cardboard Shell” Lesco came in third.
Rules for the oyster tournament force contestants to use forks, not lift the shells to their mouth, and all oysters must be cleared from a tray before starting a new one.
Come out to Woldenberg Park for the 2017 New Orleans Oyster Festival and watch these professional eaters take down some ice-cold oysters.
P&J Shucking Contest
Oyster Shucker’s transcend the lore of New Orleans food culture! Shucking oysters is truly an art. Each year, P & J Oyster Company celebrates the incredible talents of these Oystermen who share their skills at Famous Oyster Bars throughout the City. In 2015, Baily Mowat of Jolie Pearl in Baton Rouge shucked 18 dozen oysters in 2 minutes to take home the title. In 2016, Jay Gallette of Superior Seafood & Oyster Bar in New Orleans shucked 19 oysters in 2 minutes.
The competition is decided by the number of Louisiana oysters shucked in 2 minutes. The six finalists for the competition are decided after a preliminary shucking competition held this year at the Desire Oyster Bar/ Royal Sonesta New Orleans on Bourbon Street.
So come out for the 2017 New Orleans Oyster Festival, join in on the fun and cheer on your favorite shucker! The contest will be held Saturday, June 3rd at 12:00pm during the New Orleans Oyster Festival.
